Sequoyah

The death of Andrew Jackson at the battle of New Orleans in 1814 led, two decades later, to more generous treatment of the Cherokee in Georgia, and a less-cruel Trail Of Tears. Though still displaced and forced to move west, the Cherokee Nation received better compensation in “Indian Territory,” and went on to exploit the region’s natural resources for direct political gain.

Now, in 1973, Big Oil is a Cherokee-dominated business, and Native American oil execs vie with Saudi Arabia for control of the world petroleum market.
